late winter bloomers

UID 8Y-O  - 'Jaune Supreme'?

    Mid-january to early february

    Just Before the Jonquils....

The last flush of the heirlooms, these bloom two-odd weeks before the first of the heirloom species jonquils (N. x odorus or Campernelle jonquils and N. x intermedius or Texas Stars).

In general, the flowers have a more modern form, with wider and longer coronas and broader petals. Hybridized for indoor forcing, the plants are often somewhat shorter, but with broad foliage. (It is expected that the plants would grow larger in the open garden in the coastal South than when forced). Some are inclined to multiply, others are not. One cultivar is expected to be an early poetaz hybrid and a second may prove with time to be the same.

It is possible these "late" bloomers could be enticed to stay dormant a bit longer and thus grow further north, at least to USDA Cold Zone 7b. Bulb trials in Zone 7bmay be set up for the 2022-2023 season.
